Scientists capture record 17-foot-long python in Florida

The team found the python by using a new approach in which researchers track male pythons by using radio transmitters.

The snake, measuring at 18 feet 2 inches, fell short of the state record by 6 inches, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Python hunters continue to remove invasive snakes from Florida, and they seem to be getting bigger.

In addition to removing pythons from Big Cypress, researchers learn how the snakes use the area.

"The team tracked one of the sentinel males with the transmitter and found this massive female nearby", a social media post about the removal says.

Officials with the reserve posted an image of the beast they captured in the Florida Everglades, showcasing the mind-boggling size of the python. The snakes pose significant threats to native wildlife. Not only did her size break records, she also had a record number of eggs.

The Burmese python, an invasive species in Florida, was over 17 feet long, weight 140 pounds and was carrying 73 "developing eggs", according to officials at Big Cypress National Preserve.

Burmese pythons were brought to Florida in the 1970s as pets - however, some were released into the wild, and have since multiplied to great numbers, threatening the survival of local animals.

The Facebook post said hunters have been able to locate and remove several breeding female pythons in the past few months.

A 2012 study showed that since 1997, populations of raccoons in the Everglades had dropped 99.3 percent, opossums 98.9 percent and bobcats 87.5 percent.
