Debris found in Pacific Ocean after Japanese F-35 fighter jet crashes

Japan's military has reportedly found what appears to be debris from the F-35A fighter jet that disappeared from radar with one pilot on board during a training mission over the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday evening. It says the plane disappeared from radar about half an hour after taking off from the Misawa air base with three other F-35As for a flight exercise.

Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya said that the MoD "will put all our efforts to save the life [of the pilot] first", according to The Japan Times. "We will do our best to rescue the missing pilot".

The country's Air Self-Defense Force said the stealth jet, an F-35A model, went missing while flying off the eastern coast of Aomori.

The aircraft was one of four Japanese-flagged F-35s conducting training operations roughly 83 miles east of Misawa Air Base at the time of its disappearance.

The pilot is a man in his 40s, Iwaya said.

If confirmed, the Japanese loss would be the second involving the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters. Each costs around $100 million, slightly more than the cost of buying a fully assembled plane. It would also be the first crash of an A version of the fifth-generation fighter created to penetrate enemy defences by evading radar detection.

The first crash, of an F-35B, occurred in SC in September 2018, which led to a temporary grounding of all F-35 aircraft to inspect "suspect fuel tubes" that may have been a factor in that incident.

Japan has plans to procure a total of 147 F-35 fighter jets, 105 of which are expected to be F-35A for the ASDF.

Japan has just started deploying the expensive US-made F-35s since past year as part of its plan to counter potential threats from North Korea and China.

The Pentagon said it was monitoring the situation.
