Barr to testify before Senate as Mueller report looms

Democratic chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee Nita Lowey said she was taken aback that Mr Barr had reduced Mr Mueller's report to a four-page letter in just two days. Moreover, while Mueller did not reach a conclusion as to whether Trump obstructed justice, Barr and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein determined that the president did not. Barr released a four-page letter summarizing the report two days later and said he would release a redacted version of the full report by mid-April, "if not sooner".

Barr also wrote his "goal and intent is to release as much of the Special Counsel's report as I can consistent with applicable law, regulations, and Departmental policies".

Attorney General William Barr says he doesn't know if Robert Mueller supported his conclusion that the special counsel's report had insufficient evidence to establish that President Donald Trump obstructed justice.

Attorney General William Barr says he thinks "spying did occur" on Donald Trump's presidential campaign, suggesting the origins of the Russian Federation investigation may have been mishandled.

He falsely claimed that the Mueller report had found "no obstruction".

Democrats on the committee pressed Barr for more information on the final report by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Barr was asked how the Department of Justice used the flimsy Christopher Steele dossier as a predicate for an application for a search warrant before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (referring to the Carter Page warrant and the three subsequent renewals).

President Donald Trump took a victory lap after special counsel Robert Mueller concluded his Russian Federation investigation.

"This process is going along very well and my original timetable of being able to release this by mid-April stands", Barr said.

Barr said that Mueller's team "did not play a role in drafting" his letter to Congress, but he added, "We offered to have Bob review it before putting it out, and he declined".

Barr responded: "The thinking of the special counsel was not a mystery to the Department of Justice prior to the submission of the report". And Democrats immediately called for Mueller to testify and for his entire 400-page report to be released. Now, the objective is to create a cloud of suspicion around Barr which, I guess, will cast doubt on the Mueller report.

The Department of Justice has defended Barr's initial summary and stating that there is sensitive information pertaining to grand jury investigations in the original report that can not be disclosed at this time.

"We will distinguish between the various categories", he said.

Though he said the document will be redacted to withhold negative information about peripheral figures in the investigation, he said that would not apply to Trump, who is an officeholder and central to the probe.

Rep. Jerry Nadler of NY, the Democratic chairman of the House committee, tweeted Monday that he planned to eventually call Mueller to testify. Barr said at a House hearing Tuesday that the report was coming "within a week".

Barr said he plans to release the redacted version of the report "within a week".

The chairman of the subcommittee said earlier it would be a serious blow to democracy if Mueller's full report is not fully made public.

Fox News is also told that the Justice Department's Inspector General (IG) is separately looking into whether former FBI Director James Comey mishandled classified information by including a variety of sensitive matters in his private memos, including the name and code name of a confidential human source.
