Former Obama White House counsel Greg Craig indicted

The case is U.S. v. Craig, 19-cr-125, U.S. District Court, District of Columbia (Washington).

Ahead of the charges being announced, Mr Craig's lawyers insisted he was not guilty.

And they have fought the case for months, having made a private presentation to prosecutors in New York a year ago in which they made the case that when Craig spoke to reporters, in particular to a New York Times reporter who wrote an initial story on the report, it was for the goal of preventing what he believed would be a mischaracterization of the document, and didn't coordinate his outreach with Ukraine's Ministry of Justice. Craig wrote to another partner in the firm on February 13, 2012, according to the indictment.

"You are 'THE MAN, '" he wrote Craig in an email after the report received favourable media coverage, according to the indictment. The report was meant to be an objective review of the Ukrainian government's prosecution of Yulia Tymoshenko, the country's former prime minister who was convicted in 2011 on corruption charges and sentenced to seven years in prison.

Representatives for Podesta and Weber have said they have cooperated with prosecutors and believe that their clients followed the law. Manafort agreed they failed to disclose their lobbying effort, which included disseminating the Skadden report to US government officials.

As part of his probe, Mueller brought FARA charges against Manafort for his work on behalf of Yanukovych and his pro-Russia Party of Regions.

Confronted by regulators at the Justice Department about his failure to register, Craig repeatedly lied and concealed information about his work for Ukrainian clients, prosecutors wrote.

The agreement forced the firm to turn over $4.6 million it had earned for its work for Ukraine and to retroactively register as a foreign agent.

The Ukrainian government only paid Skadden $12,000 - an amount so low that it aroused suspicion in Ukrainian media.

The case was investigated by the FBI's NY field office and is being prosecuted by the USA attorney's office in Washington, DC.

The settlement painted an unflattering picture of Craig's conduct.

Craig's indictment had been expected for several weeks, with Craig's own lawyers saying Wednesday they anticipated such an outcome.

Craig was aware of the registration requirements under the Foreign Agents Registration Act but didn't want to register, the prosecutors say.

Craig appears to have been expecting action by prosecutors for some time; he retained attorney William Taylor III of Zuckerman Spaeder in the autumn of past year.

Obama's statement: "I never knew I had a White House counsel". He held jobs in the Bill Clinton presidency as well, and even helped Clinton mount a defense in the face of impeachment. Cartwright pleaded guilty to making false statements during a federal investigation.

Craig was at one time reportedly investigated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's "Russiagate" probe, before his case was passed on to the Southern District of NY and then prosecutors in Washington. While Mueller charged multiple Trump affiliates - such as Paul Manafort, George Papadopoulos, and Michael Flynn - with false statements charges, he chose not to charge a prominent Democrat attorney who worked in the Obama White House with any wrongdoing.

Barr also said that he decided there was not enough evidence to charge Trump with obstruction of justice.
