Tiger looms large, even on star-filled Masters leaderboard

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The sliding, perhaps overzealous, security guard meant well, but for a few fleeting, scary moments on Friday afternoon, the scene appeared ominous for Tiger Woods, who was clipped in the right knee and was left hobbling to the 14th green at Augusta National.

Tiger Woods entered the third round just one shot off the lead after shooting a fantastic round of four-under par on Friday.

Pre-tournament favourite Rory McIlroy has plenty of work to do after he shot 71 to sit seven off the pace at even par, while world number one Justin Rose and the respective Masters champions of 2016 and 2017, Danny Willett and Sergio Garcia, all missed the cut at four over.

And he made the 15-foot putt on the 14th for birdie.

Until now, Finau was best known at Augusta for dislocating his ankle a year ago while celebrating an ace in the par-3 tournament that precedes the Masters.

Tiger Woods of the USA walks off the 17th green during third round play. Simpson made a 37-foot putt for eagle on No. 13.

Woods had three birdies on each nine, with a bogey 5 on the fifth his only blight. Cantlay, who began the day nine shots off the lead, moved to within a shot of a group of leaders who had yet to tee off when he finished. "I wish I only had to worry about him", Molinari said of Woods.

Woods has already vastly improved on his performance at The Masters previous year, where he was three-over par at after two rounds.

"I hit the ball a little less well than yesterday", Molinari said.

But the 2013 Masters victor missed a short par putt on the par-3 16th - the bogey dropping him back into a tie for the lead at seven under alongside Day.

The 43-year-old Woods hasn't won the green jacket since 2005, and he's been seeking his 15th major title since winning the 2008 US Open.

Barely able to walk after throwing out his back bending over to kiss his daughter on the practice range on Thursday, the battling Australian somehow turned in a near flawless scorecard, with six birdies and a single bogey. "So I'm aware that it's not going to be easy tomorrow and, like I said, I can just do my best". And clean up his play on the par-5s, which have seen him make just three birdies and a bogey and go 2 under on them through two rounds.

The two major champions will be accompanied by Tony Finau, who matched Woods's 11-under total with a dazzling eight-under 64 that featured a Masters-record equaling front nine of six-under 30.

"I lift too many weights and I'm too big to play golf and then when I lose weight, I'm too small", said Koepka.
