Kentucky Derby 2019 results: Stunning victor, order of finish, and winning payouts

Setting aside the misspelled state, blaming Maximum Security's vacated win on political correctness is certainly one of Trump's most freakish sports tweets.

Runner-up Country House, a 65-1 long shot, was elevated to the winner's circle Saturday to the astonishment of Maximum Security's team, which insisted the horse did not cut off his competitors.

The only reason this probably sounds unfamiliar is because the on-track disqualification of a an apparent victor had never occurred in the 144-year history of the Kentucky Derby leading up to Saturday's decision. "It was a rough and tumble race on a wet and sloppy track, actually, a attractive thing to watch", he wrote on Twitter.

Who knows if Trump had some of the $6.2 million riding on Maximum Security, but there was an easy explanation for the overturned victory beyond "political correctness". But the race stewards upheld the objection and moved Maximum Security from first to a 17th-place finish - the first time that a Kentucky Derby win has been stripped because of an on-the-track violation.

'It feels pretty darn good, ' an elated Mott said after the race. In an exultant suite, Jason Servis, the 62-year-old trainer of the surging Maximum Security, shared hugs and congratulations with his brother John Servis, who trained the 2004 Kentucky Derby victor Smarty Jones, and with Gary and Mary West, the Maximum Security owners whose fortune came via telemarketing. "I thought (Maximum Security) had shifted out a lot". One of Maximum Security's co-owners has criticized the disqualification as "egregious" and said he was pondering an appeal. "If what happened to us was the only thing they were looking at I don't think you would have seen a disqualification".

For Maximum Security, the disappointing reversal spoiled what appeared to be his statement performance after 4-0 start.

Twitter being Twitter, it didn't take long for commenters to make the issue all about Donald Trump.

The review focused on a moment when Maximum Security barged to his right and impeded the paths of two other horses at the top of the backstretch.

As for appealing the decision, "the only recourse a person would have would be to get it into the federal court system", because of Kentucky regulations, West said, according to Daily Racing Form's website

The only other disqualification in the Derby occurred long after the race in 1968. First-place finisher Dancer's Image tested positive for a prohibited medication, and Kentucky state racing officials ordered the purse money to be redistributed.
