Huawei CFO's lawyers argue against United States extradition request

Her attorney, Scott Fenton, has argued that comments by U.S. President Donald Trump suggest the case against her is politically motivated.

Meng's detention amounted to an "abuse of process", according to her lawyers, who are seeking to delay USA attempts to extradite her on fraud charges over dealings with Iran.

Meanwhile, the prosecution indicated that it wanted to fast-track the proceedings.

Howes also said double criminality is a core principle of the Canada-U.S. extradition treaty and Canadian extradition law, and Meng's arrest violated this principle.

Wanzhou's defence team has argued that her arrest in Canada is unlawful as the crime she is accused of by the U.S also needs to be a crime in Canada as since Canada doesn't have current sanctions on financial services in Iran, the charges levied against her don't hold water.

In addition, Meng's counsel argued there is no evidence she misrepresented to a bank Huawei's relationship with a company operating in Iran called Skycom, thereby putting the bank at risk of violating US sanctions law, or that the bank relied on her statements to its detriment.

Since Meng's arrest, two Canadians - ex-diplomat Michael Kovrig and entrepreneur Michael Spavor - have been detained in China in apparent retaliation.

Meng's next court appearance is set for September, but it's still unclear when extradition proceedings will begin.

"This case is about an alleged misrepresentation made by Ms. Meng to a bank that they relied upon, and in so relying, put their economic interests at risk", Gibbs-Carsley said.

She has been free on bail and is living in one of her two multimillion-dollar homes in Vancouver while wearing an electronic tracking device and being monitored by a security company.

Since her bail, she has been under house arrest in her $3.7-million, six-bedroom property, but the Supreme Court approved her request to move to her $10-million estate in one of Vancouver's poshest neighborhods.

China has attacked Ms Meng's arrest and the extradition process as a "political incident".

Huawei has claimed political interference and denied the charges against its CFO Meng Wanzhou in a pre-hearing of the US's extradition request to Canada.

Washington wants to put Meng on trial on fraud charges for allegedly violating Iran sanctions and lying about it to U.S. banks, but the case has become a major source of irritation for Ottawa.

China and the US are now embroiled in a trade dispute that has beleaguered global financial markets.

"Ms. Meng will apply to the court, asking the RCMP, CBSA, and DOJ to disclose more evidence on this matter", said Huawei. "Canada has requested, and will continue to seek, clemency for Mr Schellenberg", she said.

In recent weeks, China has upped the pressure on Canada and halted Canadian canola imports and suspended the permits of two major pork producers.

The lawyers noted in court that there is no evidence to prove that Meng committed acts of deceit, dishonesty, or other fraudulent means, according to the statement. Meng has been under house arrest since December.

Ottawa has pressed Washington - which is locked in a trade dispute with China - to step up its pressure on behalf of the detained Canadians. The statement went on to add that her lawyers had made three important disclosures during the trial.
