‘Empire’ to end with season 6 on FOX

Fox, the parent network for both series, announced on Monday that Empire is ending after its sixth season.

Now going into the last season, there are questions about actor Jussie Smollett and if he will now be returning to the show to bid a final farewell as Jamal.

Fox Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV wrote Smollett, who plays Jamal Lyon, out of the final two episodes of the show's fifth season amid his legal troubles and confirmed late last month there were "no plans" for him to return.

Collier says the network wants to give "Empire" a big send-off and that's the focus. Smollett, 36, was accused of orchestrating a racial and homophobic-fuelled assault on himself.

Former Illinois appellate Judge Sheila O'Brien had asked for a special prosecutor to examine why the office of Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx dropped charges against the Empire star.

"We're turning the final season of Empire into a large television event. The move [of Empire] to 9pm, made it a challenge because Star was always the lead-out from Empire and obviously we don't have the 10pm hour, so it was another tough choice in a year where we were prioritizing Empire and obviously some of the other shows that we've put on the schedule". That show did have decent numbers for most of its run, but those fell to an all-time low last November.

However, despite that ratings decline, "Empire" remained FOX's second-highest-rated drama of the season, behind only "9-1-1".

"We are trying to go out guns a-blazing". The ensuing friction might be one reason that Fox is less than enthusiastic about dealing with Empire for more than one more season regardless which way they go on Smollett. Fox noted at the time that Smollett's option had been extended, so it was technically possible for him to appear on the show sometime in the future. Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard, along with several other cast members, recently penned a joint letter urging the network to bring Smollett back for Season 6.
