Brexit politician vows to press charges after being hit with milkshake

Farage, who is the latest to be targeted, was heard reprimanding his security team for not protecting him and said he would press charges against the attacker, identified as Paul Crowther.

In a statement, Northumbria Police said: "Police have charged a man with common assault and criminal damage following an incident in Newcastle yesterday".

Nigel Farage's Brexit Party is poised to dominate the upcoming European elections in the United Kingdom, according to spread betting firm Sporting Index. "But the police are there, we've spotted them and now Nigel isn't getting off the bus", Michael Botton, Mr Farage's bus driver, was quoted as saying.

Police arrived at the scene to monitor any danger the men with the milkshakes posed.

Determined to avoid a repeat of Monday's events, where he was doused in a banana and salted caramel milkshake, Farage sought refuge in the safe confines of his election vehicle.

Nigel Farage said he blames "leading Remainer MPs" for a "mercifully small" group of Remainers who have become "totally radicalised" after he was hit by a milkshake whilst out campaigning in Newcastle.

He said he had been looking forward to the milkshake, "but I think it went on a better purpose".

He explained: "It's a right of protest against people like him".

Farage, a 55-year-old former commodities broker, played an instrumental role in persuading Britain's mainstream political parties to hold a referendum on leaving the European Union in 2016, and then convincing voters to back Brexit during the subsequent campaign.

Soon, Farage's name was a trending topic on Twitter, with many weighing in on the incident in both defense and condemnation of Crowther's actions.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mr Farage accused the Electoral Commission of being "absolutely full of Remainers" as the watchdog visited the party's headquarters as part of a review into its donations system.

Meanwhile UKIP European Parliament candidate Carl Benjamin - known by his social media pseudonym Sargon of Akkad - has been "milkshaked" at least four times this month. McDonald's has made the decision to stop selling milkshakes when there's a Brexit rally nearby. Burger King later sent a follow-up tweet, stating: "We'd never endorse violence - or wasting our delicious milkshakes!".
