Amazon's compact Echo Show 5 is more smartphone, less tablet

Amazon's new feature lets users remove the day's recordings by saying, "Alexa, delete everything I said today".

Amazon Echo Show 5 sports a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 960×480 pixels.

The new Echo Show 5 has just been revealed and it arrives packing all the usual Alexa-powered smart skills but it also adds a 5.5-inch screen and in-built camera to mix.

With the new model, Amazon has given its camera-enabled speaker a significant cut in size and price. Earlier this month, a coalition of 19 consumer groups accused Amazon of illegally collecting voice recordings and other identifying information on users under 13 with its Echo Dot Kids Edition.

Both are available for pre-order today, with the first units shipping in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia on June 26, 2019.

The Echo Show 5 is available in charcoal and sandstone, while there's also a £20 magnetic stand so you can tilt the device.

Earlier this month, a group of U.S. senators and 19 consumer and public health advocates urged the Federal Trade Commission to investigate whether Amazon's Echo Dot Kids Edition is in violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.

The company today announced new ways for Alexa users to delete recordings of voice commands they've made on Echo speakers and other devices that use the digital assistant. Though its sole 4-watt speaker isn't as powerful as the Echo Show's two 10-watt drivers, we're reserving judgement until we've had one in our testing labs. Soon, you'll also be able to have Alexa delete what you just said.

Prompts on how to use Amazon's Alexa personal assistant are seen in an Amazon "experience center" in Vallejo, California.

It helps users better understand how the devices record and store audio, as well as what privacy controls users have to manage microphones and cameras on some Echo devices. In a couple weeks, you'll also be able to say "Alexa, delete what I just said" and it will expunge the voice recording of your most recent request.
