Square Enix Tips Dragon Walk, a Pokemon Go-Like AR Game

Square Enix is taking on AR location games with Dragon Quest Walk. A closed beta is set to start in Japan on June 11; plans for an worldwide release have not yet been announced.

Dragon Quest Walk is a classic RPG at the core, but it's o course based on augmented reality. As you can imagine, that can quickly become a problem, which is why the Japanese government has asked Square Enix to launch new Dragon Quest games before the weekend.

Dragon Quest XI was also released for the Nintendo 3DS so it remains to be seen what kind of plans Square Enix have in store for the upcoming mainline Dragon Quest game.

The Dragon Quest series is getting its own mobile-AR title for iOS and Android later this year, but it'll only be available in Japan with no word on a Western release yet. It is developed by Colopl and due out in 2019 in Japan. Going forward, Niantic plans to focus on perfecting its Adventure Sync technology, which lets you track your steps and distance walked whether you have Pokemon Go open or not.

Echoes of an Elusive Age was one of our favourite games of 2018, so we're pretty chuffed about the fact that executive series producer Yuu Miyake is already discussing the 12th entry.
