Mystique Wants The Team Called X-Women in New Dark Phoenix Clip

They are loved and adored by the public. As the young mutants blast off into space, they quickly rescue the shuttle crew as the space anomaly approaches. The new film begins in 1975 with a horrific and graphically filmed auto crash that orphans young Jean Grey and may give nightmares to the smallest audience members.

"She did [reach out before initially taking the role] and she reached out again and she's lovely", she shared about her relationship with Turner. Soon the X-Men must face off against one of their own as Jean grows increasingly out of control and uncovers secrets about her past and future which could change mutantkind forever.

"Dark Phoenix" climaxes with a literal jolting train wreck.

What Worked: Well, let's begin with the positive notes.

"'Dark Phoenix" isn't kidding about the "dark" part. Nerdist's Lindsey Romain says it "feels half-baked and barely alive", also describing it as "one of the worst movies I've seen all year", and IndieWire's David Ehrlich writes that it simply "has no evident reason to exist".

From left, James McAvoy, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Tye Sheridan and Alexandra Shipp gather for a somber scene in "Dark Phoenix". Kinberg, who has been a writer and producer on previous X-Men movies, makes his directorial debut with Dark Phoenix, which he believes is a natural climax and culmination to years of story telling. It's encouraging to see...while it lasts. Yet since 2016, the actress only counts three motion pictures under her belt: mother!, Red Sparrow and now the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Still, Dark Phoenix is not as much trainwreck as it is a slow-moving vehicle collision that ends up screeching to a halt right before it scratches the bumper in front of it. Not much, but a little.

Fans of Chris Claremont and John Byrne will appreciate a beginning more inline with the Dark Phoenix comics origin story. That, in a nutshell, is the problem with "Dark Phoenix".

In SYFY WIRE's latest original video, we've put together a retrospective of the entire story from beginning to end as an eclectic panel of our hosts and guest commentators weigh in on every twist and turn in the tale.

The overall tone is just tiresome and melancholy. Moreover, her plan to steal or kill or manipulate or something undefined the Phoenix Force is so vague as to make it seem like someone flipped a few pages forward in the script. It's just very dissatisfying. I think he was trying to hit a retro tone like "Stranger Things" or "Thor: Ragnarok", but it just didn't work. They occasionally monologue to one another about learning important life lessons, or about being scared of their own power, or about recovering from trauma, but they may as well be talking about the weather for all the impact it has. However, there is absolutely no substance or creativity on this side of the story.

There are, of course, other mutants whose powers aren't mentally based-but the movie doesn't seem to have any idea what to do with them.

The first adaptation was 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, which, while not ideal, earned a Rotten Tomatoes score of 58 percent. While the Marvel gurus could find some forced way to shoehorn the old characters into their series, it would feel jarringly out-of-place simply because the two have already thoroughly fleshed out completely different storylines and narrative tones.

After watching this movie, Alan Cerny said to me he felt the Phoenix storyline was unadaptable. In fact, Rotten Tomatoes brought up this general subject while speaking with her ahead of X-Men: Dark Phoenix's theatrical release. Her making an X-Men movie?
