Video shows woman spinning wildly in windy helicopter rescue

Air turbulence began to rapidly spin a female hiker as she dangled in a basket attached to a rescue helicopter.

As the 74-year-old was being airlifted Piestwa Peak in the Phoenix Mountains on Tuesday, her stretcher began to spin uncontrollably.

The Phoenix Fire Department answered questions Tuesday after video showing the morning rescue of an injured hiker spread across social media.

Rescue crews at the landing zone gave the woman medication to treat her nausea and took her to a local trauma center.

The patient is now in stable condition and has no ill effects from the spinning except for dizziness and minor nausea, according to hospital officials.

The helicopter used in the rescue was hoisted 210 times in the last six years, according to Apolinar.

In the video, you can see the patient was lowered and brought back up.

Paul Apolinar, chief pilot of the Phoenix Police Department's aviation unit told ABC Arizona that the risk of basket spin is a known phenomenon in the hoist rescue industry.

Pilots eventually managed to get some forward flight to reduce the spin.

She was dizzy and nauseous after her rescue but had no additional injuries, according to CNN.

So, now that we know that she's FINE, probably just a little dizzy, let's all go to hell and enjoy just how fucking amusing this rapidly spinning lady is.

Rescue crews held a news conference on Tuesday to explain how a person can turn into a pinwheel.

The woman was placed in a basket to hoist her off the mountain. Spinning has happened twice during that time frame.

'It's not something that's inherent to the basket or inherent to the bag.

One wrote: 'OMG! That poor woman!' Others added: 'Terrifying.

I really hope this poor old lady survived this "rescue"... also, if she did, send her to space.

"There were a lot of comments that made it very clear that a lot of folks did not understand what happened", Jamison said.
