House Dems Taunt Trump White House With Massive Amnesty Bill

The Democratic bill aims to protect Dreamers, young adults who were brought into the USA illegally as children. The measure would pave a path to citizenship for "dreamers" as well as immigrants with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) holders. But despite the green light from the President, a handful of House Republicans held up passage of the measure last week after the Senate passed the bill. The legislation stalled in the Republican-controlled Senate for months, as GOP senators were hesitant to support a package that included additional recovery funding for Puerto Rico, something the president initially opposed.

Tuesday's passage is a success for Democrats, particularly after a federal judge in Washington a day earlier denied a request by House Democrats to block Trump from transferring funds from appropriated accounts to construct his wall. It would give those who qualify 10 years of legal residence status.

The US administration led by former President Barack Obama had granted work permits to many "Dreamers" through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, but President Donald Trump ended the program in 2017. "This is great news for Nebraskans and others who have been affected by natural disasters in recent months".

H.R. 6, called the "American Dream and Promise Act", passed on largely partisan lines by a vote of 237-187. Among the bill's supporters are the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the AFL-CIO labor organization, immigration and liberal groups.

In total, some 2.5 million people would be protected, according to an estimate from progressive think tank Center for American Progress.

"However, one emergency that is not addressed is the humanitarian and security crisis on the border", Granger said on the House floor.

The vote comes almost a month after the President introduced a plan to overhaul the nation's immigration system. "Congress must get serious about securing the border, reforming a broken asylum system, and improving internal enforcement of immigration laws". He said he would continue pressing for that as part of separate legislation.

"Like one of our presidents said - Lincoln - public sentiment is everything", Velazquez said, pointing to polling data that says well over 60% of the country supports protecting Dreamers and people with protected status. We never had the opportunity to vote on it in the House.

"We all understand that immigrants make this country what it is today and we have young Dreamers that have been here for most of their lives and they deserve a path to legalization and citizenship", Mucarsel-Powell said. To be eligible, immigrants must have been younger than 18 when they came to the US, and must have lived in the USA continuously over the previous four years.

"I am pleased that we have finally rejected the political stunts & grandstanding that have made it hard to deliver much-needed relief to Americans struck by recent natural disasters", House Appropriations Committee chairwoman Nita Lowey said.
