As the 2019 U.S. Open is set to begin at Pebble Beach on Thursday, Spieth is looking to get regain his championship form and rejoin Koepka, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson atop the golf world.

He's certainly no stranger to Pebble, though, where he won the U.S. Open in 2000 in an absolute runaway, leaving the field 15 shots in the dust on his way to one of the most dominant wins in major golf history.

The harder Pebble Beach plays at this week's US Open, the better China's Li Haotong will like it.

The Northern Irishman has catapulted back to golf's top ranks with two victories on the US PGA Tour this year - at the elite Players Championship in March and last week's seven-shot win at the Canadian Open.

Willie Anderson, from 1903-05, is the only player to have won three straight.

"Everybody gets off at some point in their career, and if I can make this kind of - if this is the a year ago or so results-wise, off for me, then - and I can use these kind of blueprints of how I've gotten back as kind of my set places to go to, then things should stay in place a lot easier and not get as far off", Spieth said.

McIlroy, who was due to tee off at the 10th hole with Spain's Jon Rahm and Australian Marc Leishman at 7:51 am, is seeking to add to his tally of four majors for the first time since 2014. I'm on the golf course sometimes and I'm thinking negative things.

Mickelson, who turns 49 on Sunday, says Pebble Beach offers one of his last legitimate chances to claim that US Open crown, but he was unable to take advantage of the benign conditions and opened with a one-over 72.

"These greens are so small, you can nearly put it in the center of every green and have 20 feet, no matter where the flag stick is".

The jack - which Mickelson admitted after the round was the result of not concentrating tightly enough - was emblematic of a round in which everyone who's anyone was going low at Pebble Beach.

"And if I'm critical, it's more been iron play and a bit of driving that hasn't been as sharp, but at Memorial, that was a step up in the ball-striking".

Woods was battling back injuries at the time of the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro, and was never in contention for earning an Olympic berth.

"We're all playing from the same spots", said Woods. You hit it in a lot of the middle of the greens here, and you're going to be in a good position.

Norwegian amateur Viktor Hovland joined Koepka on four under through six holes to be tied for fourth.

Johnson has won the US PGA Tour's Pebble Beach National Pro-am twice and finished runner-up twice.

He played alongside five-time major victor Phil Mickelson, trying to complete the career grand slam with a first US Open triumph after six runner-up finishes. It was a record for the largest margin of victory in the US Open and for that matter any major championship, a record that still remains today.

"What's not to like".

In addition to course-wide Wi-Fi, the "Connected Course" experience will include an interactive video experience that delivers Toptracer technology to track players' ball flights on a large video screen at the golf course.
