Pakistan's Shoaib Malik confirms ODI retirement after World Cup exit

Sarfaraz Ahmed's team needed to smash the world record for margin of victory in a one-day global but a miracle win never looked remotely likely at a sun-drenched Lord's.

The World Cup's round-robin format - with each of the 10 teams facing each other once before the top four move into the semi-finals - has received mixed reviews, but Mashrafe relished the opportunity for Bangladesh to play all the top sides.

Liton had a flawless start to the tournament when he blasted an unbeaten 94 during his side's seven-wicket win over West Indies at Taunton but he couldn't replicate that form in the following matches. Pakistan needed to win against Bangladesh by a margin of 308 runs or more, to overtake the Kiwis - but that did not happen, unsurprisingly.

Pakistan could not qualify for semi-finals and played their last game against Bangladesh on Friday.

"The way Shaheen has bowled in the last four matches is very good", Sarfaraz said.

"What the system has done to us is that after one very poor game, you really battle to recover again".

"Cricket is a team game, we all take credit when we do good".

That they managed, with Imam-ul-Haq (100 from 100 balls) and Babar Azam (96 from 98 balls) leading Pakistan to 315-9.

Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan scored his seventh half-century of the tournament, equalling Sachin Tendulkar's record of 2003, before slashing wildly at a ball from Shaheen and being caught behind for 64.

He entered the record books with a six-wicket haul against Bangladesh in the World Cup and young Pakistan speedster Shaheen Afridi said it was "incredible" to achieve the feat at Lord's here.

Pakistan were shot out for a paltry 105 in their first match, with the West Indies winning in just 13.4 overs, meaning they took a huge hit on run rate. He has also picked up 158 wickets.

"We beat South Africa and West Indies here in conditions that are not easy for us, we ran Australia, India and New Zealand close, and that's a big positive".

Sarfaraz promised that Pakistan will emerge as a stronger team after the disappointment of this World Cup.
