Apple updates MacBook Pro and Air, discontinues 12in MacBook

The MacBook Pro gains a TouchBar and TouchID, and the device - which is available to students for $1,199 - also features a True Tone Retina display, a super-fast SSD and the Apple T2 Security Chip. The advancements of display technology, however, would now allow Apple to pack a larger screen in a body that shouldn't be significantly larger than that of the 15-inch MacBook Pro. All of this is identical to the last generation Air, but there's one change: both Airs have a new 13-inch Retina display with True Tone support, a first for the Air. Apple is dropping the older non-Retina MacBook Air, and the polarizing 12-inch MacBook that started the war on ports. Now the company is giving the same treatment to the base MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models, making them more compelling for the back-to-school season.

The MacBook Pro is seeing more substantial changes.

Apple is revving the MacBook Air, introduced last October, with a TrueTone display.

As for the 13-inch MacBook Pro, the entry-level model sticks with the same price tag in this case at £1,299 ($1,299, AU$1,999, AED 5,539), although it will again be available more cheaply for students.

The new MacBook Air is now cheaper coming in at $1,099, with students being able to purchase it for $999.

For those who like the convenience of logging in and authenticating apps and payments with Touch ID, but prefer a physical keyboard - the MacBook Air has both, although you'll have to settle for a little less grunt under the bonnet.

Now, it's Touch Bars across the MacBook Pro lineup.

The 12-inch MacBook seems to have been discontinued as well, as the model is no longer listed on Apple's website. So, you gotta love it, like it, ignore it, or go with a MacBook Air. MacBook Air is created to power through daily tasks, from email and web surfing, to photo editing and FaceTime calls, and at an even lower price, it's the do-it-all notebook for consumers and students alike.
