Labor Secretary Alex Acosta resigns after criticism over Epstein plea deal

Acosta made the announcement to reporters while standing next to President Donald Trump outside the White House.

"Acosta should have stepped down when I first called for his resignation in February after a federal judge found that he broke the law when he violated the Crime Victims' Rights Act".

During his Senate confirmation hearing in March 2017, Acosta defended his record as a USA attorney and addressed his decision to not indict Epstein on federal charges.

In the plea deal, Epstein agreed to register as a sex offender and he was imprisoned for 13 months.

"My point here today is we have an fantastic economy and the focus needs to be on.job creation", Acosta added.

"We did what we did because we wanted to see Epstein go to jail", he said, refusing to apologize for his actions.

President Trump initially defended Acosta and said he would look "very closely" his handling of the 2008 agreement.

"Sadly, this is what we've come to expect under the most corrupt administration in our history, and a Republican Senate that refuses to stand up to President Trump". However, Acosta failed to stem the tide of criticism against him and therefore, I suspect, to satisfy President Trump that he would not remain a political liability. He also used young women recruit other girls to be part of a supposed sex trafficking operation, the charges say.

"I just want to let you know this is him, not me."

In his press conference defending the 2008 plea deal, Acosta tried to paint himself the knight in shining, not rusted, armor.

The exchanges occurred in late 2018, shortly after the Miami Herald published a report on the circumstances behind the 2008 plea deal that allowed Epstein to avoid federal sex-trafficking charges.

Epstein reportedly owns an apartment in Paris, France-he was arrested on July 6 after flying into New Jersey from France-along with a mansion in New York City, a home in Palm Beach, Florida, and a ranch in Stanley, New Mexico.

Mr Acosta did not apologise for his handling of the case, saying only that the deal - which closed the FBI investigation into whether there were more victims or perpetrators - was a guarantee of jail time. Epstein was put in a work-release program and spent 12 hours a day, six days a week not in prison, but in an office. They said Epstein recently paid $100,000 to one individual "named as a possible co-conspirator" in a non-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors in Florida 12 years ago. "Today's world treats victims very, very differently". It turned out that the Acosta-engineered sweetheart deal gave him immunity from federal prosecution after a light sentence for crimes in Florida, but it did not give him immunity for his alleged exploitation of underaged girls in NY.

Prosecutors in the case in NY argue that Epstein is a significant flight risk and want him held without bail pending trial.
